Few upgrades transform a space as dramatically — or as affordably — as LED light strips. When placed correctly, they add depth, warmth, and a genuinely elevated feel to any room. When placed incorrectly, they look cheap and distracting. This guide covers everything you need to get it right the first time.
Where to Place Your LED Strips
Behind Your Monitor (Bias Lighting)
Attaching an LED strip to the back of your monitor is one of the highest-impact placements available. The glow extends your perceived display area, reduces eye fatigue in dark rooms, and makes the overall desk setup look professionally designed. Match the strip color temperature to your display's white point (6500K for most modern monitors) for the most natural result.
Under Your Desk Edge
Running a strip along the underside of a floating desk or shelf creates a floating effect that is surprisingly sophisticated in practice. The light pools onto the floor without any visible source, which reads as ambient rather than decorative. Use warm white (3000K-4000K) for this placement to avoid a harsh, clinical feel.
Along Ceiling Coves and Shelves
LED strips mounted behind a cove edge or the top rear of a bookshelf produce indirect illumination that softens shadow contrast in a room. This placement works particularly well in spaces with high ceilings. Warm white or tunable white strips work best here — you want the room to feel relaxed, not clinical.
Along Staircase Risers
Strips on the back wall of each stair step create practical illumination at night and a dramatic architectural effect during the day. This application requires slightly more planning (measuring, cutting at the right intervals, concealing the wiring run) but the result is impressive enough to draw comments from every visitor.
Choosing the Right Strip: What the Specs Actually Mean
LED Density (LEDs per meter)
Higher density means smoother, more even light with fewer visible hotspots. For decorative and ambient applications, 60 LEDs/m is the minimum. For cove lighting where you want seamless illumination, 120 LEDs/m is preferable. Cheaper strips often advertise length without disclosing density — the two are not the same.
Color Rendering Index (CRI)
CRI measures how accurately a light source renders color compared to natural light, on a scale of 0-100. For ambient lighting and decoration, CRI above 80 is fine. For spaces where you do detailed work or judge color (photo editing, art, makeup), look for CRI 90+.
IP Rating (Water Resistance)
For indoor, above-desk placements: IP20 (no protection) is sufficient and will give you more flexibility in terms of color accuracy and brightness. For kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms, or outdoor-adjacent spaces: IP65 (dust-tight and water-resistant) is the minimum safe choice.
Installation Tips That Make the Difference
- Clean the surface first. The adhesive backing on LED strips is strong, but it fails on dusty or oily surfaces. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely before mounting.
- Pre-plan the cable run. The power connector needs to reach an outlet. Map the full path before you start sticking anything down — cable management after the fact is significantly harder.
- Cut only at the marked cut lines. Every quality strip has clearly marked cut points every few centimeters. Cutting elsewhere permanently disables the section after the cut.
- Use aluminum channels for diffused light. Aluminum extrusions with a diffuser cover eliminate LED hotspots and give the strip a professional, seamless glow instead of individual dots of light.

2700K-3000K — Warm white. Relaxing, intimate. Best for bedrooms and living areas.
3500K-4100K — Neutral white. Balanced. Best for home offices and kitchens.
5000K-6500K — Cool white/daylight. Alert, clinical. Best for task lighting and monitor bias light.
RGB — Full color. Best for gaming setups, entertainment rooms, and accent effects.
